Our mushroom identification system combines AI-assisted analysis with independent identification from the Cordyceps Fungi community.
The goal isn't simply to produce a name. The goal is to give you useful information, show you what evidence supports an identification, highlight uncertainty and lookalikes, and allow experienced members to weigh in.
Important Safety Disclosure
Cordyceps Fungi's AI identification is informational and tentative. It is not a professional identification service.
A photograph alone may not contain enough information to reliably identify a mushroom to species level. Some mushrooms are extremely difficult to distinguish from photographs, and dangerous species can resemble edible species.
Neither an AI identification nor a community identification should be treated as a guarantee that a mushroom is safe to eat.
Never consume a wild mushroom solely because the AI or the Cordyceps Fungi community identifies it as edible.
When consumption is being considered, obtain independent confirmation from a qualified mushroom expert familiar with your local species.

How to get better AI results
Better evidence generally gives the AI and human reviewers more information to work with. Whenever possible, upload several clear photographs rather than relying on one image.
๐ Photograph the entire mushroom
Include the cap, stem and overall shape.
๐ Photograph the underside
Show gills, pores, teeth or other fertile surfaces.
๐ฑ Show the habitat
Include the substrate, nearby trees, soil, leaf litter or other surroundings.
๐ Include scale
A ruler or another familiar object can help communicate size.
๐ก Use good lighting
Natural or even lighting is preferable to heavily filtered or extremely dark photographs.
๐ธ Use multiple angles
Different views can reveal characteristics hidden in a single photograph.
Give the AI useful observations
Photographs are only part of mushroom identification. Include as much reliable information as you can.
- Location: State, region or general area.
- Date: When you found the mushroom.
- Habitat: Forest, lawn, field, mulch, decaying wood, living tree, soil, etc.
- Cap: Color, shape, texture, size and surface characteristics.
- Stem: Color, shape, texture, attachment and distinctive features.
- Underside: Gills, pores, teeth, spacing, attachment and color.
- Other observations: Bruising, color changes, odor or other observations you can reliably describe.

Identification
The AI's best tentative identification based on the evidence supplied.
Scientific name and common names
Names that may help you research the proposed identification.
Confidence
A description of how strongly the available evidence supports the proposed identification. Confidence is not a guarantee of correctness.
Reasoning
The characteristics the AI considered when producing its tentative identification.
Alternatives
Potentially similar mushrooms that should be considered rather than assuming the first identification is correct.
Additional photos needed
Features that could help distinguish between similar species.
Scientific and chemical information
When appropriate, the AI report may provide information about scientific characteristics, ecology and known compounds associated with a proposed identification.
This information should be treated as educational material rather than laboratory analysis. The AI does not chemically test your specimen and cannot determine the chemical composition of the particular mushroom you photographed.
Why community identification matters
AI should be treated as the starting point, not the final authority. Community review gives other mushroom enthusiasts an opportunity to independently examine the same evidence.
Members submit their own identification rather than simply clicking an agreement button.
Members can explain why they believe their identification is correct.
Different identifications remain visible when members disagree.
A community confirmation requires multiple independent identifications and sufficient agreement.
Community confirmation does not mean the identification is guaranteed or that the mushroom is safe to consume.
๐ง Don't just copy the AI
If you participate in community identification, examine the photographs yourself before submitting an identification.
Independent observations are much more useful than a community where everyone simply repeats the first answer. If you disagree with the AI, say so and explain why.
What if the AI and community disagree?
Don't automatically assume either side is correct. Conflicting identifications are a reason to slow down and gather better evidence.
- 1. Review the photographs. Look for features that may have been missed.
- 2. Add better photographs. Capture the underside, stem base, habitat and other useful features.
- 3. Read the reasoning. Compare the evidence supporting each proposed identification.
- 4. Seek expert confirmation. Especially when the mushroom may be consumed or could have a toxic lookalike.

The culinary information in an AI report is educational and should never be interpreted as a safety certification.
If the identification is uncertain, the system may withhold recipes or consumption recommendations. This is intentional.
Never eat a wild mushroom based solely on an AI result, a photograph, a community consensus, or an internet search.
When you are considering consumption, have the specimen independently identified by a qualified expert who can examine the physical mushroom.
